ARCHETYPE for the C-128
by
Mark Jordan
COMMODORE POWER/PLAY MAGAZINE
June/July, 1986
p.94
**************************************
NOTE: Because this program is written
for the Commodore 128 it cannot be run
directly from LOADSTAR 64. To run the
program, press your RESET button.
This will automatically display a menu
of all the C-128 programs on this
side. Choose the program you wish to
run.
ARCHETYPE was designed for use with
an 80-column RGB monitor or a
monochrome monitor with an adaptor.
You cannot run the program with a
40-column composite monitor or TV.
**************************************
Last month we presented the first
installment of ARCHETYPE, a word
processor for the C-128. This month
we have an updated version of
ARCHETYPE that has features that
should meet most of your word
processing needs.
If you need more information on the
operations of last month's ARCHETYPE,
you can refer back to LOADSTAR #24.
Also, pressing the HELP key will
display a complete list of all of
ARCHETYPE's commands.
CUT AND PASTE
Function keys 7 and 8 are used to
cut and paste your text. To cut a
section of your text, press F7; the
cursor keys will highlight the text
you want removed. If you want to
delete this text, press "D". If you
want to store it in the large buffer,
press "S". You can store up to two
screens in the buffer at a time. To
paste your text, position the cursor
and press F8.
SEARCH AND REPLACE COMMANDS
There are several ways to search
and replace words and phrases in your
text. Pressing the Commodore/S key
will search the entire text for a
certain phrase. (The title bar
prompts you to enter the phrase.)
The first occurence of this phrase
will be highlighted. To stop here,
press "X"; to continue to the next
occurence, press any other key.
The Commodore/R combination is used
to replace one phrase with another
phrase. (You enter the search phrase
and replace phrase as you did before.)
You must also choose whether or not
you want all occurences changed. If
you press "N" for "not" the program
will stop at all occurrences.
NOTE: Search and replace commands
are case-sensitive. If you wish to
search for the word "Green", the
program would not stop on the word
"green". To pick up both occurences,
run the search twice, or search for
part of the word, for example, "reen".
CONTROL CODES
Control codes are used to format
your text. But before we talk about
"real" control codes, ARCHETYPE has a
new control command-- Control-C.
This command will automatically
center the line that the cursor is on.
(The graphic character you will see on
the left margin will not print.)
Control codes determine your text's
margins, spacings, justifications,
and header and footers. (Page
numbers are example of headers and
footers.) All control codes are
accessed by first pressing the
up-arrow key, then following it with
a command.
If you want to change your margins,
for example, you must begin by adding
an up-arrow and the proper control
code line to the text, putting the
cursor on that line, and then pressing
F3 (to format a paragraph) or F4 (to
reconfigure the entire document.)
To change the right margin, use
"rm" as the control charcter and
follow it with the number that you
want the right margin to be. Default
values are: left margin (lm) 10,
right margin (rm) 70, and top and
bottom margins (tm and bm) 5.
If you want to offset a line, use an
up-arrow "mr" followed by the number
of spaces you want it offset. To
indent a passage, follow an up-arrow
with "in" and the number of spaces you
want to indent (relative to the left
margin.) Unlike the "mr" command, the
text will stay indented until you turn
it off with an "in0".
Other up-arrow commands are "jy" to
justify and "jn" to turn justification
off. To force a page to end at a
certain line, use "nx" (no follow up
value required.) The "ss" command
controls spacing-- "ss2", for example,
will double space the document.
Finally, you create one-line headers
and footers with the up-arrow method.
To make a header, type in the "^"
up-arrow, "h" for header, then "le"
for left edge alignment, "re" for
right edge alignment, or "ce" for a
centered header. After this, if you
want automatic page numbering, follow
the header text with another up-arrow
and "pn". If you want the header to
appear on the first page as well as
following pages, you must place it on
the top line of the document.
For example, if you wanted "John
Doe, page #" to appear at the upper
right of the pages, you would enter:
^h.re John Doe ^pn.
Footers work in exactly the same
manner-- just follow the up-arrow
with an "f" instead of an "h".
OK, just a few more things to learn.
There is also an underlining function.
To use it, press the SHIFT/@
combination. You will see an
underlining marker on the screen: what
ever follows this mark will be
underlined. To turn this function
off, press the SHIFT/@ combination
again. NOTE: this function was
designed specifically for the
Gemini-10x printer. If this function
will not work on your printer, modify
line 955 to match your printer's
specifications.
Speaking of printers... By pressing
the ESCAPE key you can access your
printer's special functions (such as
enhanced-printing mode). Just follow
the checkerboard character that you
will see with the proper chr$ value.
NOTES
ARCHETYPE reformats its screen with
control characters and all. To make
sure your margins are not fouled up,
reformat the document before putting
in any special control codes, then go
back and insert the control codes
manually with the insert/delete key.
Also, if you are printing a document
with, for example, 100 characters on a
line (condensed mode), wait until you
are ready to print, place the new
margin settings in the document, then
choose the reformat option after
pressing Control-P. You can print up
to 255 character lines this way, but
you will be unable to preview them and
you will need to re-reformat if you
need to edit further.
